The supply of starting pitchers was limited at the deadline. You can question who is to blame for the Tigers' failure to trade Eduardo Rodriguez to the Dodgers, but whatever happened, the outcome could not have been worse, Ken_Rosenthal writes. More:
Mato negotiated Rodriguez’s limited no-trade clause into the five-year, $77 million free-agent contract the pitcher signed with the Tigers in Nov. 2021. Rodriguez has every right to use the clause as leverage, whether it’s to avoid a team in an undesirable geographic location or competitive position, or to secure additional contractual benefits as the price for waiving his veto power.
It’s difficult to know exactly how to portion out blame for this fiasco. Mato deserves some if Rodriguez was as willing to join the Dodgers as both teams believed. Tigers first-year president of baseball operations Scott Harris deserves some if he misread the intentions of both Rodriguez and Mato, and for failing to develop a backup plan in the event the Dodgers deal collapsed.
For the Tigers, the failure to trade Rodriguez represented a catastrophic outcome, and not simply because they lost the chance to acquire prospects for arguably the top starting pitcher on the market. If Rodriguez opts out, the Tigers will lose him for nothing; teams cannot extend a qualifying offer and receive draft-pick compensation for a player who previously rejected a QO.
Harris told reporters he had conversations with Rodriguez on the phone, by text and in person in the days leading up to the deadline. Based on those discussions, the Tigers and Dodgers operated under the assumption Rodriguez would approve a trade to Los Angeles. Otherwise, they would not have wasted their time negotiating when they could have been pursuing other deals.
