I’ll say it again: The baseball media, myself included, was too slow to report on the rise of performance-enhancing drugs in the 1990s and 2000s . Is that right? Maybe not, considering Tatis’ performance. But players generally prefer to police themselves, both on and off the field. A previous generation of players effectively rendered their verdict on the Steroids Era last December by using their votes on the 16-memberto block Barry Bonds and Rogers Clemens, both of whom were suspected of using PEDs, from the Hall of Fame. Bonds and Clemens each received less than four votes from the 16-member committee, which was comprised of Hall of Famers, veteran writers and baseball executives.
The current players evidently hold the same hold view of PEDs. Tatis’ suspension did not just cost him nearly $3 million in salary and his chance to participate in the 2022 postseason, during which the Padres fell three games short of the World Series. It cost him the respect of his peers. And at least one All-Star Game.
