Exclusive: RogueOne director Gareth Edwards reflects on the lessons learned from the StarWars prequel that he brought into his new movie, TheCreator
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT With the two seemingly sharing similar genre roots, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards is sharing the lessons he learned from the Star Wars prequel that he brought to The Creator. The latest sci-fi effort from Edwards is set in a dystopian future in which humanity are in an intense war with artificial intelligence, who have developed a mysterious new weapon that has the power to put an end to both humanity and the war.
You learn a lot, I guess. I think the thing that Star Wars does so well that is incredibly useful, especially for this movie, was Star Wars is very mythical. People describe it as science fiction, and it's the easiest way to explain Star Wars, but it's not really accurate. Yes, there are robots and spaceships, but it's got more in common with a fairytale or with a biblical epic samurai film. It's a lot of things from the past.
Initially, it was like, "Why are you doing that?" It felt weird. But in the movie, it feels right. Because when you go around Asia, there will be an electric car here, but just to the right, there'll be someone who's hot-roded their moped still. Some farmer that's still got it working on plowing the land somehow, and it's from the 1960s or whatever. That weird combo; I love all that stuff.
Why Edwards Is A Modern Sci-Fi Guru Well before putting the Star Wars franchise on a new path of spinoffs, Edwards was already establishing himself as a name to watch in the sci-fi genre with his feature debut, the horror movie Monsters led by Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able and set in a world in which a NASA probe crashes into Mexico bringing giant tentacled monsters to the world.
