Final-inning heroics snap Padres' winning streak at 3 games; Blake Snell sparkles before taking line drive off knee
Until a comebacker knocked him from the game.Snell struck out 12 over seven dominant innings, then watched from the side as a heavily-used bullpen — first Luis Garcίa and then Tom Cosgrove — gave up two game-tying homers.
It was a worst-case scenario as the Padres had thrown everything they had in a bullpen game in Saturday’s win and, based off Snell’s start, went Garcίa at least an inning early in a 3-1 game on Sunday. Brenton Doyle followed with a single. Then Austin Wynns put the go-ahead run on second base with a bunt before Juan Soto, after Cosgrove hit a batter, made a diving catch in left. From there, the wandering runner was doubled up at second after the throw into Manny Machado was flipped to second.
That fetched Padres manager Bob Melvin from the dugout to bring in Martinez, who was jogging in from the bullpen when umps signaled for the grounds crew to cover the field and headed straight to the dugout for the 85-minute rain delay. After a visit with trainers, Snell remained in the game and struck out Elehuris Montero to end the inning.
