Rockies head groundkeeper Mark Razum is ready for opening day after a nearly three-year battle with colorectal cancer: by psaundersdp
Mark Razum sat behind home plate at Coors Field Thursday afternoon, looking out at his perfectly manicured infield and the 2.66 acres of emerald grass that make up the largest outfield in the majors.
But then the 60-year-old, who still has a kid’s passion for baseball, started talking about his wife, Amy, and all of those who have supported him through multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and all of the nasty side effects.“This field is my baby,” he said. “And sitting here, knowing everybody who supported me — my doctors, the Rockies, other groundskeepers around the league, my friends and family — I can’t tell you how much it means to me.
“There are not a lot of guys out there that we baseball players consider ‘baseball guys.’ ” veteran outfielder Charlie Blackmon said. “But Raz is a baseball guy. He has this quiet toughness, resilience, and work ethic, and this mindset that a lot of baseball players want to get. Then came more chemotherapy sessions during the pandemic. In the summer of 2020, he was declared cancer-free, even though he remains under a doctor’s surveillance, with blood tests and CT scans every six months.
