By using Moonikin as a human surrogate, NASA can test the effects of certain environments and atmospheres on humans during space travel.When the Artemis I mission launched in November, Commander Moonikin Campos was in the pilot seat as the Orion spacecraft circled the moon.
Named in homage to NASA engineer Arturo Campos, who died in 2001 and played a key role in navigating Apollo 13 safely back to Earth, the ATD is made of a rubber material and weighs about 170 pounds. “Arturo Campos embodies the NASA spirit of passion, dedication, creativity and teamwork,” said Rebecca Wickes, JSC's public affairs officer. “Beyond his extraordinary skillset, he was passionate about sharing human spaceflight with diverse audiences. It is poetic for his name to be used as the moonikin that is paving the way for the next generation of space explorers from all over the world.”
Outfitted with sensors, a fully suited Moonikin fastened in the Orion seat can provide more realistic results rather than a myriad of mathematical guesses and predictions.“We’re responsible for everything to do with keeping the crew alive from an emergency and survival standpoint, and the mannequin gives us a very accurate profile and quantifies the overall safety levels of the system,” Gohmert said.
