.TeiShi’s new music video with Blood Orange is a downtown New York City kid’s wardrobe dream.

Colombian-Canadian singer Tei Shi’s latest music video, “Even If It Hurts,” featuring Blood Orange , includes a concoction of cutting-edge clothing that is a downtown New York City kid’s wardrobe dream. The track has an early-aughts R&B sound that Shi compares to Ashanti and Ja Rule, but with a seductive, octave-climbing twist, while the video, shot in the idyllic, lush Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, New York, transports viewers to a suitably otherworldly setting.

“Even If It Hurts” is a far cry from Shi’s prior videos—it seems that over the past few years, the singer has gone through a dramatic style evolution. Her first video, in 2014, “Nevermind the End,” shows her in a pert, Lolita-esque uniform, caressing an older man. A year later, in 2015, for “Bassically,” Shi adopted a more aggressive sound with a look to match: a dominatrix-inspired ensemble of a red latex corset and a camel trench, with a cap perched on top of her short, bleached-blonde hair.

But with “Even If It Hurts,” Shi’s style is taking another major step forward. The music video is a reintroduction of sorts for the artist and a debut of her new look; the final stage of her discovering her style identity. “Anytime you go away for a while and you don’t release something, and you come back with new material, you almost have to reintroduce yourself. I wanted to go back to that natural state of being.

The singer’s makeup is now pared back, and she is wearing her hair natural. Instead, she’s choosing to be more adventurous with her clothing. Some of the more extreme looks include a striped Christopher John Rogers dress with tiered sleeves and two graphic bodysuits—one by Collina Strada and another blotted red and yellow piece from the Fall 2019 Mugler collection.

She left her home in Mexico’s northern state of Chihuahua at 3:15 p.m. on March 2, 2002, to go to a weekend class downtown—a computer class she took between her long weekly shifts at a maquiladora. Her mother, Norma, expected her 16-year-old daughter home no later than 9 p.m., but Paloma never returned. “She didn’t come home,” Paloma later said in a testimony. “She never came home.” Twenty-seven days after Paloma’s disappearance, her body was found near the Chihuahua-Ciudad Aldama highway with signs of sexual violence.
