Sunak would be wise to make concessions that ensure Brexit will uphold and improve our protections rather than trash them

The central problem with the REUL Bill is just how thin it is for something that gives huge powers to ministers. It’s not even a “skeleton” Bill on which to flesh out the detail later, it’s essentially a blank cheque for ministers to decide whole swathes of retained EU laws.

It’s worth saying that many of these issues are far from abstract. Continuing inherited EU rules on workers’ hours and holidays or on sewage and water quality standards are very much of relevance to ordinary people’s daily lives. However, an amendment by Lord Krebs on food protection regulation may well spark a climbdown because it forces the Government to seek the advice of independent expert statutory bodies such as the Food Standards Agency before going ahead with any change.

Rees-Mogg’s own “dashboard” of EU rules identified by the Government includes 1,700 covered by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs , but it hasn’t been updated for months and word in Whitehall is that the number will soon increase. “The Government needs to use this delay to rethink its approach and to consider the many sensible improvements that peers are suggesting,” she said. “Ministers must also publish the laws they intend to scrap through the Bill as soon as possible so that those affected can check for mistakes and unintended consequences.”
