The letter by cross-party MPs and Lords warns that ‘dangerous’ forced prepayment meter installations could lead to deaths this winter
Campaign groups and charities have also been making calls for urgent action, with Citizens Advice warning last week that 3.2 million people ran out of credit on their prepayment meter last year – one person every 10 seconds – because they could not afford to top up.
“Between the end of 2019 and the end of 2021, the proportion of smart meters operating in prepayment mode increased from 2.9 million to 3.4 million, with 60,000 switches taking place in the third quarter of 2022 alone.”The figures, revealed in a response by Energy Minister Graham Stuart to written questions by Labour MP Rachael Maskell, show disabled people account for more than one in five people on the meters.
The MPs and Lord also want Mr Shapps to write off the standing charge for prepayment meter customers this winter and to ensure they pay no more than direct debit customers, as well as using the spring statement to provide targeted financial support to help them clear their debts.
