The PM will offer visas to 3,000 Indian professionals aged 18-30, weeks after Home Secretary sparked a diplomatic row by accusing Indians of illegally staying in UK
The Home Secretary added: “Look at migration in this country – the largest group of people who overstay are Indian migrants. We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well.”
Sources close to Ms Braverman on Tuesday refused to comment on whether she supports Mr Sunak’s announcement.that members of the Indian trade negotiating team were incredulous over Ms Braverman’s comments during the party’s own conversations with the delegation. The source said: “They asked us whether she spoke for the Government when made these comments. They couldn’t understand why she was conflating the issue of more visas with wider immigration in the UK.”
Speaking before his meeting with Mr Modi on Wednesday, Mr Sunak refused to put a firm timeline on the free-trade deal and warned against trading off Britain’s negotiating aims to get an agreement quicker. He told reporters: “There’s lots of different things that go into trade deals. I wouldn’t sacrifice quality for speed. And the other thing with India, remember thatwhich is incredibly strong and indeed strategic and happens across multiple different aspects of policy. You know, trade is an important part of it, but it’s not the only part and we’ll be making progress in all of them.”
