No one is really that interested in what he has to say
Rishi Sunak speaks during a question and answer session during the annual NFU conference ? It wasn’t that this was the first time a prime minister had gone to speak to the farmers since Gordon Brown in 2008. Or, in fact, that Sunak managed to cheese them off by suggesting that farmers were just in it for the love, not the money, as though they were just running high-pressure businesses as a nice outdoor hobby.
I’ve been struck while covering the Government’s evolving position on Gaza that while pro-Israel Conservative MPs are interested in what Sunak says, they seem to seek out Lord CameronPart of this is just the way the Tory psyche has worked for a long time. Cameron will be wryly amused at the idea backbenchers seem to respect him more now, given his own premiership was essentially derailed by his own attempts to manage endlessly rebellious MPs who didn’t trust him.
“The problem we have is that we are making progress on important things – we do have things to show to voters that Rishi has done – but the big ‘if’ here is whether voters are at all prepared to listen to us at the election,” says one minister, dolefully. The plan is for him to meet voters and persuade them personally that he is the better Prime Minister than Keir Starmer would be, and to reassure them. He and his team are confident that Sunak has far more charisma and ability to win over people when he meets them face to face.
