Rishi Sunak appears to be gaining momentum in the race to become the UK’s next prime minister. Sunak has won the the public backing of more than 100 MPs, while Johnson's supporters claim he has met the threshold - but not all those names are public
Nadhim Zahawi, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, has thrown his support behind Mr Johnson.
Mr Zahawi, who stood in the previous Conservative leadership contest, added that he had seen “a preview of what Boris 2.0 would look like” during his short stint as chancellor. Tallies suggest at least 128 MPs are behind Mr Sunak, while Mr Johnson has the public support of 53 and Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, the first and only candidate to officially declare she plans to participate in the contest, has just 23.Opposition MPs have said another Conservative should not become the country’s next prime minister without a general election.
Mr Blackford said it is “vital that opposition parties work together to force a vote of no confidence, and pile pressure on the Tories to call a general election, so voters can decide”.
