The Prime Minister has been too busy to publish his tax return, he claimed as he promised to cast light on his finances “shortly”
The Prime Minister’s finances have been under scrutiny since it emerged that his wife, Akshata Murty, was not domiciled in the UK for tax purposes. She has since said she will pay British tax on her worldwide income despite her non-dom status.
Speaking during his trip to Paris for a summit with Emmanuel Macron, Mr Sunak repeated his claim that he wants to lower the overall tax burden which has risen to its highest peacetime level ever. He said: “Over time I’ve been very clear my ambition is to cut people’s taxes. I’ve said that multiple times in the past. I think people recognise that Covid and now a war in Ukraine, and the impact that’s had, has had a major damaging impact not just on the economy but on our public finances. I think everyone understands that.
“The economic priorities are to halve inflation, reduce debt and grow the economy. Those are the right priorities and I’m confident that the Chancellor’s budget will deliver on all of those. That is the focus of our policy and that’s the thing that people want to see.” The Prime Minister described inflation as “the worst tax of all” in an echo of Margaret Thatcher, signalling he does not intend to act on the tax burden until inflation has fallen significantly.
