Having said all that, we’re hungry for more Rihanna maternity looks. We want more Martine Rose track jackets and Saint Laurent miniskirts – that excellent combination of mens- and womenswear she does so well; more Celine cargos, tangerine coats and crystal-embellished Gucci X Balenciaga heels – for the high-low mood she perfected long ago. We’ll even take the Awake trackies, worn with Vans X A$AP Rocky Old Skool sneakers, thank you very much.
It’s exhilarating to watch her do her thing. But it has always been thrilling to watch Rihanna go her own way. She is the influencer’s influencer. If these high-octane pregnancy looks convince one woman that shrouding their bump in diamanté chains is a good idea—or simply that wearing whatever she wants is a good idea—then that’s a powerful fashion message that goes beyond how good Rihanna’s latest vintage haul is.
