Rick and Morty just made a season 1 joke extremely dark.

It was something no one had ever seen before, it was whacky and juvenile yet smart and impactful, and some of the most iconic adventures/characters were in season 1.
In Rick and Morty season 1, episode 1 “Pilot”, Rick pulls Morty out of school to go on a dimension-hopping adventure, and apparently, this wasn’t the first time. While Rick and Morty are running for their lives from the Galactic Federation, Morty’s parents - Jerry and Beth Smith - are called to Morty’s school to have a talk with the principal, as Morty has missed an alarming number of school days, and it’s all because Rick keeps pulling him out of classes.
Rick & Morty’s Jerry Did To Morty What His Father Did To Him In Rick and Morty #7 by Alex Firer and Fred C. Stressing, a horde of murdered gods escape from their hellish afterlife, Anti-Hala, and wreak havoc upon the world. One Rick and Morty god in particular, Nunzumel, is on his own mission to become the strongest god of them all, and he’s doing this by murdering his fellow deities and stealing their divinity.
While Jerry’s dad was right to pull his young son away from a cosmic deity hellbent on world domination, just as Jerry was right to tell-off Rick for making his son miss school, both situations were handled terribly. It wasn’t Jerry’s fault Nunzumel approached him, and it wasn’t Morty’s fault that Rick pulled him out of school.
Thankfully, Rick and Morty fans know this scene had little to no impact on Morty based on how his storyline has played out since, though that same lesson has definitely stuck with Jerry, as he’s proven time and again to be a deplorable coward in the face of danger.
