Richard E Grant has shared a touching tribute to his late wife Joan Washington on the one-year anniversary of her death.
The Withnail and I star had confirmed news of Washington’s death on social media last year, writing: ‘ONLY YOU! Joan – Love of my Life & Giver of Life to our daughter Olivia.supports HTML5 video‘To be truly known and seen by you, is your immeasurable gift. Do not forget us, sweet Monkee-mine.’
Washington was an esteemed dialect coach with almost 40 years’ experience, who had worked with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Emma Stone and Vanessa Redgrave.She met Grant when she was teaching an accent session at the Actors Centre in Covent Garden in November 1982, where the Loki actor ‘begged her to give me private voice lessons’ as he had recently emigrated from Eswatini in Southern Africa.
Grant recalled her price was £20 per hour, but he could ‘only afford £12’, which Washington agreed to on one condition. He wrote: ‘She fixed me with her big monkey-eyes and said: “All right, but you’ll have to repay me if you ever ‘make it’.”’ The couple went on to welcome a daughter together, Olivia, while Grant is also stepfather to Washington’s son Tom, from her first marriage.
