Mississippi native and Houston-based professor is a novelist, memoirist and essayist. His work earned him a coveted 'genius grant.'

. The annual"genius grant" recognizes fellows worthy of financial support for their work. The fellowship program was established in 1981 with a $625,000 prize paid quarterly over the span of five years.

MacArthur"genius grants" come with no strings attached, allowing fellows a period to pursue their creative and intellectual visions. Laymon is a Mississippi native, who serves as the Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of Creative Writing and English at Rice University. He has published acclaimed and best-selling fiction, memoir and essay collections. His novel,"Long Division," was published in 2013, the same year as the essay collection,"How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America."

The MacArthur Foundation cited Laymon for"bearing witness to the myriad forms of violence that mark the Black experience in formally inventive fiction and nonfiction."
