Rice nips Charlotte on late free throws, runs winning streak to four
With 26 points Thursday night, Rice's Quincy Olivari reached double figures for the 17th consecutive game.Quincy Olivari produced his first double-double of the season, pairing 26 points with 10 rebounds and sinking two free throws with two seconds left as Rice held off Charlotte 65-63 on Thursday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.Mekhi Mason added 15 points for Rice , which is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. Olivari scored 20 points in the second half to lead the Owls to their fourth victory in a row. The junior guard has scored at least 20 in five consecutive games and reached double figures in 17 straight. Lu’Cye Patterson led the 49ers with 18 points, adding five assists and three steals. Khalifa added 13 points, and Igor Milicic Jr. had 10.The 49ers scored seven straight points to take an 18-14 lead midway through the first half. The Owls answered with an 8-2 run to take a 22-20 lead, and Evee added a 3-pointer. But Rice was held to just two points the rest of the way as Charlotte went into halftime with a 28-27 lead.
Olivari’s 3-pointer early in the second half sparked a 13-0 run. Mason and Cameron Sheffield hit back-to-back layups to give the Owls their largest lead of the game, 49-34, with 11:25 to play.With 1.8 seconds remaining, Olivari was fouled and made both free throws. Charlotte attempted a pass the length of the court, but Max Fiedler stepped in front of it to seal the victory.
“It was another incredible game here at home,” Rice coach Scott Pera said. “A lot of credit goes to Charlotte. They hit big shots. Our guys made sure we got the last shot so we could get to overtime or the win.
