The Martholme Viaduct lies on the very edge of the Ribble Valley area
Ribble Valley councillors across all political groups have backed a Green Party call to fully reopen a former railway viaduct and line as part of a walkers and cyclists’ route to Hyndburn and Padiham near Burnley. The latest full meeting of Ribble Valley Borough Council backed a motion by Green Coun Malcolm Peplow about the Martholme Viaduct and completing the Martholme Greenway route.
“According to the Ribble Valley Citizens’ Panel and 2018 Perception Survey, residents say access to nature is one of the most important issues of making somewhere a good place to live . And the level of traffic is seen as one of the issues which most needs improving. “A route over the landmark viaduct and through our beautiful countryside will bring more people into our borough and increase its prosperity. Residents will be able to travel safely at extremely low cost to Padiham, Burnley or Great Harwood, to exercise and maintain good health. It would enable residents to travel emission-free, giving us cleaner air and adding to efforts to reduce climate change. And former railway lines help nature to thrive.
