Rex Early, a towering figure in Indiana Republican politics who's also known for his colorful personality, has died.chaired former president Donald Trump's campaign in IndianaIn a lengthy tribute posted Saturday on Twitter, Gov. Eric Holcomb called Early the"Indiana Republican Party's Iron Man" whose support was always coveted.
"From dog catcher to U.S. President, lines formed at his door for an endorsement. His wit was a weapon that could take over a room, or torpedo a campaign. He wore the ring, and just preferred you kiss it," Holcomb said, adding:"I’ll forever be proud, and grateful to have known Rex, whose loyalty and devotion to our state and nation will never be surpassed."Early, who was a routine delegate to the Republican National Convention, made an unsuccessful run for governor in 1996.
Indiana GOP Chairman Kyle Hupfer said Early's contribution to Republican politics in the state went beyond his chairmanship.
