movies and crafting a plot where the villains aren’t connected to Peter and the solution requires outside assistance. For much of its 148-minute runtime, the film walks a fine line between being a sequel toThe comparison isn’t a flattering one, as the animated feature didn’t rely on the mere idea of universe-hopping to provide its jolt. It told a dynamite character story which happened to involve one young Spider-Man teaming up with other multidimensional spider-folk.
I wish there was more focus on the legal challenges, as sadly the film trades real storytelling for crowd-pleasing Easter Eggs, but I do appreciate the film’s willingness to draw blood in terms of turning J.J. I shouldn’t discuss Matt Salinger’s Captain America cameo or David Hasselhoff’s Nick Fury scene. Nor will I spoil the mid-credit scene with Jared Leto’s Morbius standing around unaware of what to do or say since his movie hasn’t opened yet. Much of the film’s second half dives headfirst into “remember when” conversations and shameless fan-bait. To the extent that it works, it’s because the performers are so gee-whiz sincere and dorky that the cynical content overcomes its cynical context.
