While that attitude may be understandable, as Hollywood groans under the weight of superhero overload, it's not warranted with the animated"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the thrilling sequel to the Oscar-winning 2018 entry, the film that once again underscored the law of animation: live-action actors aren't required to make a film that is resolutely alive.In"Into the Spider-Verse," audiences were introduced to an Afro-Latino Brooklyn teenager named Miles Morales , who was bitten by a radioactive spider, gets spider-like abilities and, in the wake of the real Spider-Man's untimely death, tries to take on the role of Spider-Man.
This time around, he becomes involved with Miguel O'Hara and Jessica Drew , who have the unenviable job of keeping the multiple parallel universes where a Spider-Man exists from collapsing into each other. They oversee a team of various Spider-People; there are now even animal and machine Spider-Creatures . But Morales' very existence could be putting all the universes in jeopardy.
It makes for a dizzying experience that offers a wonderful sense of surprise because you're never certain what's coming up next. Freed from the constraints of real-world, live-action physics, the filmmakers have fun exploring just how far they can push things, and they make most superhero films seem stiff and predictable by comparison.
