Side quests often ruin pacing and distract from goals but Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Forbidden West’ crafts unique missions to keep players enthralled.
The side quest has become a problem in open-world games. What was once a fun diversion that added depth and extra storytelling moments has turned projects into bloated and overwhelming messes.
Aloy returns for another adventure in “Horizon Forbidden West,” the sequel to “Horizon Zero Dawn.” San Francisco is one of the places she visits. “Forbidden West” builds atop this narrative and delves deeper into the franchise’s lore. Aloy has to save the world yet again, but the developer, Guerrilla Games, raises the scope and stakes of her battle. She must venture to the western U.S. in search of a way to rebuild the Gaia terraforming program that was destroyed in the original.
In addition, Aloy makes new tools including a diving mask, pullcaster, shieldwing and vine cutter. These act as locks to some areas and quests, and players will need to advance through the story to attain the necessary gear to fully explore the world. The tools are also pivotal in solving some of the complex puzzles later on.
