Review: 'Fast X' is stupid as a square tire but still goes the distance
But"Fast X" , which admittedly makes as little sense as its predecessor, reminds viewers that there is gas in the tank yet. Thanks largely to the comically taunting presence of the dastardly villain Dante and some cool, car-flipping action scenes, the franchise gets a jump-start just as the engine is being turned off.
As everyone within earshot of the internet over the last 22 years knows, the"F&F" movies aren't just about careening cars but, the one you choose, not the one you're born into. Near the start of the film, we're at the LA home of Dominic Torreto , loving wife Letty and adorable young son Brian , who are entertaining the rest of the gang, er family, as matriarch Abuela Torreto gives all gathered an emotional without-family-you're-nothing speech.
But this scene of homey camaraderie is threatened on two fronts. Back in"Fast Five," our heroes took out Brazilian evil-doer Reyes , and his son, Dante, has been thirsting for revenge ever since. He has put together a massive army of minions to make Dom and the entire crew suffer before treating them to a painful death.
Then there's the Agency, the covert anti-crime organization that Dom and friends have been working for, which has turned on our pals under the new leadership of Aimes . After Dante sets a trap for Dom and his buddies in Rome that makes them look like terrorists — in which Rome and the Vatican are nearly destroyed in a spectacular action sequence — it seems our family might not survive.
Of course, they do, but it's getting there that's half the fun. As usual, there are the stunning exotic locales , the memories of the late"F&F" star Paul Walker, the teasing banter between Tej and Roman , a couple of cool music cues and all manner of high-octane highway tomfoolery that defies logic and physics.Running time:
