Scott A. Zanon presents snippets of information about trees in alphabetical format without talking down to his young audience.
Using an alphabetical format allows him to convey sentence-length nuggets of information without talking down to his young audience. The caregivers who are reading to kids can either expand on the subjects and answer questions, or simply move on the next letter in the alphabet. Some of the entries are relatively simple and straightforward: Under “B is for Bark,” for example, the explanation reads, “The outward covering or 'skin' of the tree.
Others may require a little more explanation by whomever is reading the book to a kid: For “C Is for Chlorophyll,” the explanation reads, “Green pigment in plants that absorbs energy from sunlight necessary for photosynthesis.”“X Is for Xylem: Main part of the tree trunk made up of tiny tubes which transport water and minerals from the roots up the trunk and branches to the leaves.
A child plays in falling leaves, an adult and a child water an apple tree, a squirrel scurries in the understory and insects climb on the branches of trees. While the no-nonsense text sticks to the facts, the soft-focus illustrations invite imagination and exploration. Their style, which often has the feel of fingerpainting, might inspire imitation by young artists.
Together, the text and illustrations happily unite logical and artistic approaches to their subject matter. The age range for kids who might enjoy the book varies widely. Toddlers might appreciate turning the pages and looking at and commenting on the pictures, while older kids with a horticultural bent and a fascination with new vocabulary could use the book as a jumping-off point for further exploration of the natural world.“The ABCs of Trees” can be ordered from
