Saturday night, there was an unusual affair at the Cadillac Palace Theatre: a one-night-only, concert-style production of “Children of Eden” starring Michelle Williams.

Michelle Williams stars in"Children of Eden" in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.

That was more than 31 years ago now, and the piece has had a simmering subsequent Stateside life in regional, community and amateur productions. Among we musical theater geeks, at least, its score is highly prized: “In Whatever Time We Have” is a beautiful look at love and mortality, and a cabaret staple. “The Hardest Part of Love” was tailor-made for empty nesters. “Wasteland,” despite its title, has one of Schwartz’s stickiest melodies.

Another way to go might be to emphasize its environmental themes, which are more present that I realized all those years ago, especially in Act 2. On a metaphorical level, the piece is very much about humans chaffing at authority and the right director could, I think, move the show away from Biblical paternalism toward an exploration of how our foundational myths explain so much about modern mores.
