“When people read about historical places, it’s hard for them to envision them,” said Catherine Grooms, who serves as treasurer of the historical society. “This is an opportunity to visit an actual space.”

The society is leading an effort to restore the house, built in 1854, and open it to the public.

She said she is pleased that her family’s history will be preserved for others to appreciate, in Oberlin and beyond. Carol Lasser, a retired history professor at Oberlin College, is serving as manager of the site. She hopes to have it open to the public in late 2024, as a museum and educational center.Too much African-American history, she said, is told from the perspective of white people.Indeed, only about 2% of the 2,600 properties designated as National Historic Landmarks by the National Park Service are primarily associated with African-American history.

In addition, two members of their family participated in, and gave their lives for, John Brown’s 1859 raid on the U.S. arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, a key event leading up to the Civil War. Evans also may have used his undertaking business to help runaway slaves, hiding escapees in coffins, said Lasser, who continues to research the house and its inhabitants.
