Shop workers say they have considered leaving the area due to high levels of crime in Plungington
On a quiet, rainy Sunday in October, two shops in a Preston suburb were robbed, just hours apart. Plungington became a crime scene, not somewhere where people live or nip out to get milk.
In the 12 months leading up to August, eight separate incidents of robbery were reported. With the recent spate of robberies in the area we spoke to people in the area about how they were feeling. "I phoned the police and we had to get the customers out through the back door. All he got was some cigarettes and a small amount of change from the till - we had only just opened up so didn't have a lot in. It really was pointless. We closed the door and I was really shaken, but there were customers banging on the door being really impatient, wanting to know what going on and why we weren't opened. It's unsettled me because I was scared he would come back.
"I was by myself and I was panicking, but I have to work so I have to be okay. I am the owner and I can't just let him steal my money." "Around here, everyone says they are depressed. When people hear about what is happening they get really shaky and nervous. Sometimes thieves come with a trolley to steal things but when you call the police they say shoplifting is everywhere and they can't do anything - that it's up to us if we want to close. They say not to call 999 but call 101 instead. They only come if it gets violent.
