Researchers figure out how to improve Li-ion batteries’ lifespan - GIST_science
Researchers at Korea’s Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology have developed a method to strengthen lithium-ion batteries’ anodes, making them more resilient to volume changes., the scientists explain that changes in anode volume are caused by multiple cycles of charge and discharge that degrade electrical contacts. The final result of such changes is a reduction in both battery capacity and life.
To demonstrate their approach, the team used a conventional anode containing silicon nanoparticles held together by a polymer binder. To accommodate the web-like structure, they removed the binder by heating the anode using an annealing process. The gap between the nanoparticles was then filled in with reduced graphene oxide solution, which dried up to form a web that held the silicon nanoparticles together and prevented them from cracking.
Upon testing, the modified anode was able to retain most of its charge even after several charge/discharge cycles.
