The Pentagon says it's still assessing the appropriate level of access to the troops.

, as Russian troops gather at the Ukrainian border and in nearby Belarus, arguing the lack of access does a disservice to Americans, particularly those whose loved ones serve in the military.

American journalists have had varying degrees of access to U.S. troops overseas since at least World War II. Over the course of the Vietnam War, the Pentagon gave war correspondents substantial access. There were some in the Defense Department who grew to believe that some of the reporting ultimately undermined the war effort and troop morale. That in turn had a chilling effect on the access commanders gave journalists.

Interest fell off in the embed program in the later years of the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as troop levels came down and the U.S. grew to rely more on drones and special operators, who are more difficult to embed with.
