After “coughgate,” staffers say, it’s all downhill from here
“Let’s do that over. He’s coughing in the middle of my answer,” a visibly annoyed Trump said after Mulvaney dared to cough during the Oval Office interview. “I don’t like that; you know I don’t like that . . . if you’re going to cough, please leave the room. You just can’t—you just can’t cough.”
Administration officials told Politico that “Coughgate,” as some staffers have termed the incident, is emblematic of Trump’s growing disdain for Mulvaney, and potentially the beginning of a familiar process for the president, who is on his third chief of staff in less than three years and whose administration has been in a near constant state of upheaval, in no small part due to his changing whims. Officials stressed that Mulvaney’s job is safe for now.
Mulvaney’s not going anywhere yet; aides told Politico that Trump is unlikely to replace him “in the foreseeable future.” But it’s no accident that he’s served only as the “acting” chief of staff. Trump has made clear that he prefers to have his staffers serve in temporary roles, as it gives him more power over them and an ability to make changes as he sees fit.
. “It gives me more flexibility.” It’s a good set-up for Trump. For Mulvaney and others in his service, not so much.
