Chicago’s theater community suffered a trio of losses this past month. Paola Coletto, Beth Murphy, and Vincent Williams all made major contributions to supporting local theater artists in very different ways. And while none of them had a high profile onstage , they all created vital places for work to be created and honored.

Coletto, a former faculty member at Columbia College Chicago, taught physical theater and mask there and founded the School for Theatre Creators in Chicago in 2012, working with many directors, actors, and writers. Her pedigree in physical theater was impeccable: Coletto was one of only 40 students in the 67-year history of theto be certified as a pedagogical specialist under the direction of the school’s founder, legendary French actor-director Jacques Lecoq.

Her international career included work throughout Europe, the United States, Israel, and New Zealand. But though she moved back from Chicago to her native Padua, Italy, in 2018, where she established theIn a post on the, former colleagues recalled her enduring contributions to the school.

Her longtime friend and colleague Sean Michael Kaplan, a Chicago native who also studied at L’Ecole Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq and cofounded Kiklos Teatro in Padua, noted on Facebook, “She once told me, ‘ . . . people find me difficult because I let them know that life can be exceptional—there’s some that just can’t see it or they’re too tired to make it happen.’

I pushed hard for her to write a book—’who would ever read it? No one has the time anymore, it’s better they live words than read them. . . ߴ”Beth Murphy, who died Monday at 68, wasn’t a performer or a teacher. But the owner of Murphy’s Bleachers wasn’t just a part of Wrigleyville life.
