The bonfire has attracted widespread criticism in recent years amid reports of shots being fired, alongside the burning of posters, wreaths and election posters.

Relief has been expressed in Derry amid reports a controversial bonfire at the site of an £11 million redevelopment project in the Bogside area of the city in August is not expected to go ahead next month.

Read more: Construction of £11million 'urban village' in Derry's Bogside to start in Autumn after sale agreed The land, where several buildings including the Bogside Inn were demolished in 2021 to make way for the regeneration project, was used as a bonfire site last year. “After several conversations with the bonfire builders they have informed us that they have made the decision not to have their bonfire due to young people from outside the area fighting and causing antisocial behaviour last year."

SDLP councillor John Boyle said his understanding is that the bonfire will not go ahead, a move that will be "welcomed very much by the people in that area". "I suspect that those who have been responsible for building the bonfire have seen some of the contention around other bonfires, thought about it, and hopefully come to a reasonable conclusion."
