While she wouldn’t spill the title, as it’s still a work in progress, the novel’s genre — romance — and plot outline was fair game. “I took a lot of my own life and applied it,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to read something that I could see myself in, and it was really frustrating because there isn’t .”
She said the collaboration has been, so far, an invaluable toe-dip into the world of publishing, which can be intimidating for new writers. To be able to connect with not only an Indigenous mentor but also other emerging writers in the program, Bitternose said that has a special value.
