Former Reginan David Hein co-wrote Come From Away, an award-winning Broadway musical that's coming to Regina and Saskatoon.
As part of their research, Hein and Sankoff received a government grant to visit Gander on the 10th anniversary/reunion in 2011.
“They’d say, ‘Don’t spend money on that, just come and stay with us.’ They’d give us keys to their house and then they’d leave we were just strangers,” said Hein, who compared it to how thousands of travellers were greeted in 2001. “The people on Grander and the surrounding towns opened their homes and their hearts. They brought them into their school auditoriums and their churches and their legion halls.
Come From Away premiered in 2015 and has been going strong ever since, minus a brief hiatus during the COVID pandemic. It ran in New York from 2017 until just a few days ago, finishing as one of the top 50 longest-running shows in Broadway history.
