Cole Phillips is a highly-touted pitcher who recently graduated from Boerne High School. He was projected to be a first-round draft pick in the Major League Baseball draft that begins Sunday. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in April, Phillips and his family are preparing themselves for the option of possibly playing college ball for Arkansas if he doesn't get picked in the draft.Still processing a career-altering moment, Cole Phillips signed scores of autographs like always.
“It felt like Velcro had unconnected from my elbow - like it was ripping down my arm,” said Phillips, a recent Boerne High graduate who signed with Arkansas in November.“I tried shaking it off, but I knew right away, it was something significant,” Phillips said. The next day, Phillips was diagnosed with a tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. Nine days later in Houston, he had it repaired with Tommy John surgery.Phillips was already headed in a great direction when he signed with Arkansas in November.Phillips’ fastball was consistent hitting the mid 90’s during fall’s showcases.“For a while, I was really important,” Merrell said. “I was getting calls every day.
Phillips was undeterred with all the extra attention. The velocity on his fastball kept climbing. He pitched a consistent high 90s at the beginning of the season. Phillips was 4-0 with 42 strikeouts, seven hits allowed and no earned runs in 231/3 innings before his season ended. Merrell said: “He might have swung a bat for us, but he had the draft coming up and his future was in front of him.”“I knew this was definitely taking a hit on my stock,” Phillips said. “I was upset about that. I had been training extremely hard. When I felt like everything was headed in the right direction, that’s when it hit the hardest.”
