The issue is estimated to affect 1% of the 40,168 vehicles involved, the filing said, around 400 cars. Though the loss of power assisted steering does not affect steering control, the agency said it does require greater effort from the driver and could increase the risk of a crash. Tesla said it identified 314 alerts for the issue among U.S. vehicles potentially related to the recall but said it was not aware of any injuries or deaths linked to the issue.
The carmaker said it has already issued an update to fix the problem, adding that it has been downloaded by more than 97% of affected vehicles as of November 1.
