I trained my fingers to smooth and tuck my coils into neat plaits and swelled with satisfaction at the finished, if imperfect, looks. This was coupled with actually swollen fingers and an irritated, itchy scalp. I’d always prided myself on not being tender headed or difficult to braid, but now there was no stylist to take into account, only me and my sincere discomfort. I began searching for an answer to why my scalp was so inflamed.
May was working and living at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, when she first considered developing Rebundle. The school didn’t have available recycling, and May lacked a car to transport recyclables herself. So she set out on a personal low- to zero-waste journey. “I started looking at all the individual components of my routine: What am I using and doing, eating, and what can I make swaps for? And hair just happened to be one that I was not able to make the swap.
