Review: A mostly French program was performed by Jeremy David Tarrant with absolute authority.

Organist Jeremy David Tarrant with the organ inside the Chapel on the campus of St. Mark's School of Texas, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 in Dallas. With a new lease on life, the organ in the chapel of St. Mark’s School of Texas, in North Dallas, was splendidly displayed Tuesday night in a recital by Jeremy David Tarrant.

Unwisely, the organ was installed and voiced when the chapel was completely empty. Without the usual pews and chairs, the acoustic was very bright and live, and the organ was gauged accordingly. When the furniture returned and the chapel filled with sound-absorbent people, the organ couldn’t begin to fill the room or support rousing singing. There was, as Gertrude Stein once said, too little there there.that wrought much destruction in North Dallas.

Organist Jeremy David Tarrant performs as part of the Robert T. Anderson Recital Series at the Chapel on the campus of St. Mark's School of Texas, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023. The biggest work on the program was the six-movement Seventh Symphony of Charles-Marie Widor . Longtime organist of the church of St. Sulpice in Paris and a hugely influential teacher, Widor is best known for the flashy Toccata from the Fifth of his 10 symphonies for organ. The complete Fifth is sometimes played, but rarely are the others heard in their entirety.
