Colombian midfielder Nelson Palacio, who previously played at Atlético Nacional in Colombia, could bolster RealSaltLake's defense.
South Korea's Son Heung-min fights for the ball against Colombia's Jhon Jader Duran, right, and Colombia's Nelson Palacio during their friendly soccer match between South Korea and Colombia in Ulsan, South Korea, Friday, March 24, 2023. Real Salt Lake has used 2023 to bring in plenty of talent in one of the busiest transfer windows for the club in recent memory. On Thursday, it added to that cadre of players.
RSL announced the signing of Nelson Palacio via permanent transfer. The 22-year-old comes by way of Atlético Nacional, a first division team in Colombia. His deal runs through the 2026 season, with RSL holding options in 2027 and 2028, per a news release. “Nelson’s addition represents another fantastic piece for our roster for both 2023 and beyond.” said RSL general manager Elliot Fall said in the release. “Providing another high-level option to our already excellent midfield, Nelson’s athleticism, composure, and ball-playing ability with provide an excellent complement to every other player in our midfield.”
Palacio is the third Colombian player RSL has signed this season. The others are Carlos Andrés Gómez and Cristian “Chicho” Arango. The club broke a transfer fee record with Arango’s signing earlier this month. While Palacio won’t be expected to score goals, his role as a physical midfielder could bolster RSL’s defense. He could be eligible to play games as soon as July 8, when Arango is also expected to make his first appearance.
