DARPA has officially chosen Raytheon to develop a working prototype rotating detonation engine as part of its "Gambit" program.
The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has awarded Raytheon to develop a working rotating detonation engine demonstrator . If achieved, the "Gambit" program should produce a more compact, higher efficiency propulsion system than conventional missile propulsion. If all goes to plan, it should also offer the potential for much lower running costs.
The technology is similar in concept to Pulse detonation engines used in German V1 "Doodlebug" flying bombs during WW2, but there are some essential differences. For example, RDEs eliminate the need for purging after each pulse. The development of such engines has the potential to result in significant fuel savings, but RDEs suffer from instability and produce higher noise levels than other types of aerospace engines.
