Rasmus Hojlund has scored just three goals for Man United so far following his big-money arrival from Atalanta in August.
That was Erik ten Hag's assessment when he, for the first time, explained why Manchester United had made the decision to invest up to £72million in striker Rasmus Hojlund. He joined the Reds from Atalanta in early August, ending the club's long-term pursuit of a new goal-getter.
"I think he has such a huge potential and now it is up first to him to explore that and we will support him – all the coaches," said Ten Hag. "I'm sure the whole team was waiting for a type like him and they will integrate and in the dressing room or on the pitch they will help him.Thirteen games into his United career, Hojlund is struggling to prove himself as a regular source of goals.
His performances, despite a lack of goals, have been both promising and encouraging. He has led by example on several occasions in recent weeks, putting the efforts and performance levels of more senior figures to shame. He was, for example, unfortunate to be hooked ahead of Marcus Rashford in the Manchester derby just over a week ago.
United's five first-team wingers, including outcast Jadon Sancho, have racked up just three assists between them so far this season, all of which belong to Rashford. Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri, Rashford, Sancho and Antony have just five goal contributions between them this term, four of which are assigned to Rashford's name.
Hojlund demonstrated with his first goal against Galatasaray last month that if a dangerous cross comes in, he will attack it with a vengeance, in the hope of connecting with it and scoring. He met Rashford's cross that night like his life depended on it.
