Collectors are keen to snap up coins that are worth significantly more than their original value, and particularly rare coins can even go for thousands of pounds.
This 50p coin is estimated to be worth around £140, the Liverpool Echo reports, meaning the seller got a lot more than its value. However, this may be due to the fact it was still sealed in its original packaging.The coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimate around 210,000 were made. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other.
According to its online listing, the "Kew Gardens 50p genuine 2009 from the royal mint SEALED very rare" had a starting price of £150. But after a 12-way bidding war, this soon jumped up to £410, plus the £5.55 delivery fees. If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change, the first thing to do is check the date on it. This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p, with this version not tending to sell for as much.
