Greg Maddux, four-time Cy Young winner, Hall of Famer and brother of pitching coach Mike Maddux, has joined theas a special spring training instructor. Along with Mike, the Madduxes combined for 18 Gold Gloves at pitcher. Greg won 18 of them. It’s the most ever by a player at any position. “We are going to use him in all areas on the pitching side, but you’ve got a guy with 18 Gold Gloves, you’ve got to use them there,” managersaid. “He took a lot of pride in fielding his position. It grew with each one he won and he wanted to win it again. So, we’ll definitely be using him in that area.”
By any metric, the Rangers could use help. They ranked 23rd in defensive runs saved at pitching last year at -7 and 27th in fielding percentage. All while having the fifth-fewest chances among pitching staffs.spoke of “dominating” fundamentals this offseason, he often cited the pitchers’ fielding issue. Mike Maddux recently said he intended for the idea of pitchers’ fielding to be “important” to the Rangers. Young said Greg Maddux would be in camp for several weeks.
Greg Maddux held a similar position with the Rangers from 2012-15. He had most recently worked as a special assistant to Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and as a pitching coach at UNLV where his son, Chase, pitched.
