The bleak picture of staffing in the RAF is revealed in internal documents seen by theipaper that show that the service is turning to outside help to try to resolve the situation 🔴 Exclusive from BenGartside

Former defence chief Lord West describes the situation as a ‘disgrace’.

The partially redacted documents point to “issues” linked to aircrew recruitment, training and deployment processes – and are the latest evidence to emerge of worrying staffing problems for the UK’s air defence force. By November, the situation had improved with 27 F35s and 33 pilots, but that included Australian and US pilots over on exchange and was “not a staggering amount”, Mr Wallace admitted to MPs.

A UK commitment to train pilots from countries including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as part of a deal to sell Typhoon fighter jets was also blamed for reducing the capacity available for training UK pilots.analysis of the latest available MoD figures shows that the aircrew shortages are happening despite a drop in the number of RAF planes in recent years – both in terms of total numbers and aircraft in service.
