The photographer's first solo exhibition, Quiladelphia, is a love letter to radical queerness
in New York City. "The show's imagery mirrors what it means to be a Black man while incorporating respectability politics and [this idea of] correctness."is a raw and emotional assemblage of work. The exhibition features grainy black and white imagery of Lemons and his peers in bold positions: sometimes nude, sometimes in bondage, sometimes in bridal-inspired dress. The featured subjects, all friends of the photographer, range from fashion industry peers to sex workers.
"There are so many things I have to consider when I'm making an image and it feels as if I'm always being straddled or pulled apart in a way," Lemons explains. "It's also very egotistical. Yeah, I'm really good at making pictures that make you really consider perspective.
"There's endless multitudes of what it means to be Black and queer," he continues. "It's like 'Welcome to my multiverse' in a way, but then at the same time, each image says a very different thing, and it's just really fun to slice it all up and really tease out concepts that I think everyone thinks about. If you get it, you get it."
