BREAKING: Queen Elizabeth approves U.K. government's request to suspend Parliament, which is expected to stop opposition lawmakers from blocking Brexit.
Queen Elizabeth has approved the U.K. government's request to suspend Parliament, which is expected to stop opposition lawmakers from blocking Brexit.
The suspending of Parliament is known as"proroguing" Parliament. When Parliament is prorogued, any motions or questions lawmakers have put forward then lapse until Parliament formally opens again. “To deliver on the public’s priorities we require a new session and a Queen’s Speech. “I hope, a deal with the EU is forthcoming, Parliament will then have the opportunity to pass the Withdrawal Agreement Bill required for ratification ahead of 31 October.”
The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, has asked to meet the Queen to block the move, and vowed to do"everything we can to stop Boris Johnson's smash and grab against our democracy." Corbyn has opposed a no-deal Brexit, the default outcome on October 31, as in reality"a Trump-deal Brexit" which would put the UK"at the mercy of the big US corporations.
The immediate reaction to the news has been one of shock from the majority of lawmakers opposed to the Johnson government. So it seems that Boris Johnson may actually be about to shut down Parliament to force through a no deal Brexit. Unless MPs come together to stop him next week, today will go down in history as a dark one indeed for UK democracy. https://t.co/68lFnEgiyr
