Ratcliffe currently owns Nice in France, who finished fifth last season, three points off the Champions League places. They are currently fifth again in Ligue 1, in with every chance of qualifying for European competition next year. Nice and United both being in the same Uefa-run competition, should Ratcliffe’s bid be the one the Glazers go with, represents a problem. This is not to say Ratcliffe also would not be able to find away around the rules too.
Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Leipzig are a great example. Both clubs are associated with the energy-drink maker and when they both found themselves wanting to compete in European competition, Uefa rules appeared like they would get in the way. However, European football’s governing body ruled “no individual or legal entity had a decisive influence over more than one club”.
“It is irrelevant as QSI are not involved in the United deal,” the insider adds. “But if there was some kind of link suggested, do you really think there wouldn’t be a way around the rules?”
