A disaster from start to finish... Qatar have officially solidified their place as the worst-performing World Cup host in history after losing to the Netherlands in their final group game.

The Middle-Eastern side had already become the first host nation to lose their opening game and the first to be knocked out after just two games following the 2-0 defeat to Ecuador and the 3-1 loss to Senegal.

They had a chance to claw back some pride against Holland on Monday afternoon, but in the end the opposite happened, with Louis van Gaal’s side cruising to a 2-0 win to secure their place at the top of Group A. The Netherlands completely dominated the game, with Cody Gakpo opening the scoring after 26 minutes, making it three goals from three games for the Arsenal, Liverpool andFrenkie de Jong doubled their lead just minutes after the break when he tapped home Memphis Depay’s shot that was initially well-saved by Meshaal Barsham.

The result means that Qatar have become the first host nation to lose three games at their own World Cup.
