Qatar officials have defended the decision to adorn Lionel Messi in a traditional Arab robe before he lifted the World Cup trophy.
Sheikh Tamim added on Twitter: ‘We have fulfilled our promise to organise an exceptional championship from the Arab countries.
While Messi was already set to go down as one of the best players in history, the World Cup win is the crowning glory of his remarkable career.Reacting to Argentina’s first World Cup triumph since 1986, Messi said: ‘So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don’t fall, I can’t believe it…‘We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim to.
Messi also dismissed speculation he would retire from international football after the World Cup, although he confirmed he would not feature at the next tournament in 2026.
